Odoo 19 vs Odoo 20: Should You Upgrade?
What changed for businesses, what was removed, and who should upgrade now. Written by an Odoo Ready Partner that already runs four of its own products on Odoo 20.
Updated October 2026
The short answer
- On Odoo 17 or older: plan your upgrade now. Odoo fixes bugs for its three most recent major versions, and with Odoo 20 out, that is 18, 19 and 20.
- On Odoo 18 or 19: you have time. Upgrade in a quiet month, after you check the changes below against how you use Odoo.
- New to Odoo: start on Odoo 20.
Some of what follows is in Odoo Enterprise apps, such as Planning, Sign and Studio. If you run Odoo Community, the core changes still apply to you.
What is new in Odoo 20 that businesses notice
Accounting.
- Parent accounts replace account groups, and account codes are now optional.
- Payment statuses are renamed: "In Process" becomes "Paid", and "Paid" becomes "Reconciled".
- Asset models are replaced by depreciation models.
- Accounting can run without the Inventory app, and bills can be paid in batches through a new bank payment interface.
Sales and purchasing.
- Orders and invoices can switch between tax-included and tax-excluded prices.
- A sales dashboard with quick filters sits above quotations and orders.
- Pricelist rules can apply to specific periods or days of the week.
- Orders can ship without the Inventory app.
- Purchase orders can carry a default Incoterm per vendor.
Inventory and manufacturing.
- Lots and serial numbers can be generated in bulk.
- Delivered cost of goods updates when a product cost changes after delivery.
- Continuous production lets later operations start before the whole batch is ready.
- One Produce button replaces several in Manufacturing, Shop Floor and Barcode.
Phones and offline work.
- Offline mode lets people create, edit, archive and delete records without a connection.
- Files shared from a phone can become bills, expenses, tasks or leads.
AI. Agents can work across the system, and Odoo can connect to outside tools through MCP. All AI features now use credits you buy from Odoo. See Odoo 20, AI agents and MCP.

Before you decide
- List your custom modules, Studio changes, third-party apps and custom reports.
- Check the table above against the apps you use every day.
- Run the upgrade on a copy of your database first, and have the people who use Odoo test their own work on it.
- Pick a go-live date in a quiet month, with a way back if testing turns something up.
